Extra Shields
by The Cogs
Extra Shields adds new shields, shield platings and a shield repair kit to the vanilla armor progression, with enchantment support built around them.
What it does
Each new shield is a variant of the vanilla shield, and shield plating upgrades add to them in the same way the vanilla armor system does. The mod keeps its items on the existing progression path, so players reach them through crafting and loot rather than separate menus. Crafting recipes are documented on the mod's wiki, and they show in EMI for 1.21.1 and in RRV for 1.21.8 and later. Reliable Recipe Viewer is optional, so a player can skip it and read the wiki instead.
Players reach the new shields through woodland mansions, ominous vaults and nether fortress bridge chests. Each shield gains a special effect when it blocks: evoker fangs can rise beneath an attacker, a launch can throw an attacker away, and an absorption effect can drain an attacker's health. Plate shields cost more durability and take a longer cooldown after an axe hits them, while a disabled shield gives a short speed boost. The mod is client and server, so a server and every player need it, and it requires Fabric API. It is published for Fabric and NeoForge across 10 release versions, 1.21 – 26.3, and is not open source; it is released under All rights reserved.
Enchantments were tested and balanced across the mod, but some enchantments are compatible with some others and not with the rest. The wiki lists the incompatibilities. The mod is incompatible with Roughly Enough Items, so REI should be removed when Extra Shields is installed.
Key features
Shield variants
New shields sit alongside the vanilla shield, each with its own material and durability.
Shield platings
Platings upgrade a shield in the vanilla armor manner, trading durability cost and cooldown for effect strength.
Shield repair kit
The kit repairs a shield quickly during combat, but each use permanently lowers that shield's maximum durability.
Blocked-hit effects
Blocking an attack can summon evoker fangs, launch the attacker, or drain their health, depending on the shield.
Enchantment support
Enchantments on the new shields are tested for balance, and the wiki lists which ones conflict.
