Roughly Enough Items (REI)

by shedaniel

Roughly Enough Items lets players search and browse crafting recipes, usages and items from a single screen without leaving the game.

What it does

Roughly Enough Items, also called REI, is a recipe and item browser. Its screen lists every item the installed mods add, and selecting an entry shows the recipes that craft it and the recipes that use it. Search accepts plain text, tooltip text, tags such as $logs, regular expressions written as r/.../, quoted phrases for names with spaces, and the | operator to match either of two terms.

REI works on either side, and neither side needs it, so a single client or a host that wants recipe lookup for everyone connecting can both run it. The mod requires Architectury API, Cloth Config API and Fabric API on Fabric. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Rift, with files for 1.16.1 – 26.3, and the project is open source under the MIT License. Snapshot builds are published as well.

Key features

  1. Recipe and usage browsing

Selecting an item shows the recipes that produce it and the recipes that consume it.

  2. Search syntax

Search supports plain text, tooltip text, tags, regular expressions, quoted phrases and the | operator.

  3. Compatibility with JEI plugins

The mod supports JEI plugins, and some mods may need the REI Compatibility Workaround.

  4. Component for mixed setups

A host can run JEI alongside the REI component so players using either mod are supported.

  5. Item and tooltip matching

Tags and regex search narrow long lists when a modpack adds many items.

How it compares

Full comparison

Just Enough Items (JEI) is the other recipe browser named in this catalog. It is open source under the MIT License and covers 1.8 – 26.3 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Either side can run it, and neither needs it. EMI is open source under the MIT License and is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.18.2 – 1.21.1. Players need it on the client, while the server may skip it.

Questions

Does Roughly Enough Items need Fabric API?

Yes, on Fabric the mod requires Fabric API, along with Architectury API and Cloth Config API. Those two libraries are required on all loaders.

Can a host run Roughly Enough Items alongside JEI?

Yes. Either side can run REI, and neither needs it, so a host that wants to support both JEI and REI players can add the REI component next to JEI.

Why does a mod need the REI Compatibility Workaround?

Some mods may not work with REI directly. The workaround is a separate install that the author describes as needed only by those mods.
