Fabric API
by modmuss50
Fabric API is the shared library of events, hooks and compatibility code that 15,282 catalog mods list as a required dependency.
What it does
Fabric API is a library for the Fabric loader. It adds no blocks, items or screens of its own. Instead it supplies common code that other Fabric mods call: event callbacks, registry helpers and access to game systems such as particles, biomes and dimensions, which are hard for a single mod to reach on its own.
Entity Culling, Mod Menu, YetAnotherConfigLib, Xaero's Minimap and Architectury API are among the mods that require it. Fabric API sits in the mods folder next to them and must match the game version. Files exist for 48 release versions in the range 1.14 – 26.3, and snapshot builds are published as well.
Either side can run it, and neither side strictly needs it. The project is open source under the Apache License 2.0, with public source code, an issue tracker, a wiki and a Discord server.
Key features
Events and hooks
Callbacks and small APIs let several mods react to the same game actions, which improves compatibility between mods that touch the same code.
Registry synchronization
Registered content is kept in sync between server and client, a task every content mod would otherwise solve separately.
Crash report details
Information about installed mods is added to crash reports, so a report shows which mods were loaded when the game failed.
Access to game systems
Particles, biomes, dimensions and similar systems that the base game keeps closed are opened up through stable interfaces.
Rendering API
A rendering interface that aims at compatibility with optimization mods and with mods that overhaul the game's graphics.

How it compares
Cloth Config API covers the same game versions and, like Fabric API, can run on either side without being required on either. The difference is loader reach: Cloth Config API ships files for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, while Fabric API is published for Fabric only. Both projects are open source.
