Just Enough Items (JEI)

by mezz

Just Enough Items (JEI) is a recipe and item browser that sits beside the inventory, published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge on 1.8 – 26.3.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient or server, optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.8 – 26.3

What it does

JEI places a searchable list of every item in the game next to open inventory screens. Selecting an item shows the recipes that produce it and the recipes that use it, including recipes added by other mods. On crafting screens, a button moves the ingredients of a shown recipe into the crafting grid.

Search accepts filters: a minus sign in front of a word excludes matching items, and quotes keep a phrase with spaces together. Single items, an item with its sub-items, or every item from one mod can be hidden from the list with modifier-clicks.

On newer game versions the server holds the recipe data, so the author asks for JEI and the mod loader on the server as well, which lets the server send recipes to clients. JEI requires MezzConfig; MezzConfigGUI is optional.

Key features

  1. Item list overlay

A panel next to the inventory lists all registered items, with a search bar that filters it as the text changes.

  2. Recipe and usage lookup

Each item opens two views: the recipes that create it and the recipes that consume it, across crafting, smelting and modded machines.

  3. Move ingredients

The [+] button on a recipe moves the needed items into the crafting area when they are in the inventory.

  4. Search filters

Words can be excluded with a leading minus sign, and phrases with spaces are matched when written in quotes.

  5. Hiding items

Control-click hides one item, control-right-click hides it with its sub-items, and control-shift-click hides every item from a mod.

  6. Cheat mode

In cheat mode items can be given directly, including items with large amounts of NBT data, and items can be deleted.

How it compares

Full comparison

EMI is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, one loader more than JEI, but for a narrower span of game versions, 1.18.2 – 1.21.1, against 1.8 – 26.3 for JEI. EMI must be installed on the client, while a server may leave it out. Both projects use the MIT License.

Questions

Does JEI have to be installed on the server?

It can run on either side, and neither side strictly needs it. On newer game versions recipes live on the server, and the author asks for JEI on the server too so recipes reach clients.

What does JEI require?

MezzConfig is a required dependency on every loader listing it. MezzConfigGUI is listed as an optional dependency.

Which mods build on JEI?

130 catalog mods require it, for example Just Enough Professions (JEP), Just Enough Farmer's Recipes, Just Enough Immersive Multiblocks and Create Horse Power.

Are the newest JEI files stable releases?

The latest Fabric and NeoForge file, 31.13.0.68 for 26.3, and the latest Forge file, 15.71.0.223 for 1.20.1, are in the beta channel, both dated 2026-10-15.

In the catalog

Just Enough Items (JEI) is one of 3,514 Library mods on ModsFinder, and one of 2,348 Library mods for Fabric. 8,071 mods support Minecraft 26.3.
