Flowing Fluids

by Traben

Flowing Fluids gives water and lava physics that spread, drain and refill more like the real thing, so most fluids become finite.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.20 – 26.2

What it does

Fluids flow outward and down slopes, fill gaps and form pools. Spread distance and how strongly a pool levels itself can both be tuned, which makes aqueducts practical to build. Fluids that cannot continue are finite and stop once they run out or meet a block, so supply has to be managed instead of placing two source blocks for endless water. Oceans, rivers and swamps still act as infinite sources, though they refill at a limited rate and can be drained if emptied quickly; the sea-level absorption behaviour is adjustable too.

Fluids displaced by blocks are pushed aside rather than lost, and pistons can move fluid upward to pump it automatically. A handful of new gameplay elements, such as farmland occasionally drawing on water, consume or drain fluid to encourage water management, and most can be configured or disabled. Dozens of settings cover performance, flow behaviour, gameplay and visuals, and the /flowing fluids settings command with /flowing fluids help exposes them in game.

The mod is built for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 18 release versions, 1.20 – 26.2, and is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, so it is open source. It is required on the server and optional for players. It is a spiritual successor to earlier abandoned water physics mods, written from scratch for modern Minecraft, and the author notes it is not yet feature complete.

Key features

  1. Finite fluid flow

Fluids spread outward and down inclines, fill spaces and form pools, then stop once their supply runs out or is blocked.

  2. Adjustable flow

Spread distance and how aggressively fluid levels itself in pools can be changed, allowing aqueducts and similar builds.

  3. Limited natural sources

Oceans, rivers and swamps act as infinite sources with a capped refill rate, and they absorb returning water at sea level.

  4. Piston pumping

Pistons can move fluid upward, so fluid can be pumped automatically without losing what blocks displace.

Use cases

Aqueducts and irrigation

Finite flow and adjustable spread let builders route water over long distances while managing how much is in use.

Survival water management

Players must track their supply of water instead of relying on infinite source blocks, which gives the game a resource to manage.

Who it’s for: Players who want water and lava to behave more like physical fluids, and server owners who want fluid management without installing the mod on every client.
