What it does

Backbone is a small utility mod for Fabric and NeoForge that groups a handful of minor features into one install. Its main additions are an extra set of arguments for the place jigsaw command, a forced-rotation option that fixes the direction of a placed piece, and a discard command that removes an entity from the world without the side effects of kill. The mod works alongside the structure block and the place command, so existing structure workflows keep their usual behavior.

The rotation option controls how a placed jigsaw piece turns. With the forced flag set to true, the piece takes the rotation that was given; otherwise the provided rotation is only one of several random variants. The discard command is used like kill, but it removes the target without triggering its death handling, which helps with entities added by other mods that do not die properly. The mod also adds only the math Mojang needs to place paintings and structures correctly, and it is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only; the source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Forced jigsaw rotation

A jigsaw placement can take a fixed rotation, so the piece faces the direction the command requests instead of a random variant.

  2. Discard command

A discard command removes an entity from the world. It is used like kill but does not run the death handling, so entities that do not die properly can still be cleared.

  3. Structure block compatibility

The jigsaw extension works with the structure block and the place command, so structures can be placed from either.

  4. Painting and structure math

Only the math needed for proper paintings and structure placement is included, with no extra systems.

How it compares

Full comparison

Prometheus is a Fabric and NeoForge mod for client and server with a custom license that is not open source, covering 1.21 – 26.2. ForcePlace is a Fabric-only mod for client and server, open source under the Apache License 2.0, and covers 1.21 – 1.21.4. More Structure Control is open source under the MIT License, runs on client and server, and targets Forge and NeoForge for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1, so it is the option for Forge.

Questions

Does Backbone need to be installed on the client?

No. Backbone is server-side only, so players join without installing anything.

Which loaders does Backbone support?

Does the forced rotation option change random placement?

Only when the forced flag is set to true. Without it, the provided rotation is added to a random one.
