Maps of the Unknown
by Nerjal_Nosk
Maps of the Unknown changes how explorer maps find their target structure when loot tables and villager trades create them, with options to adjust the search.
What it does
When an explorer map is produced from a chest loot table or a villager trade, the mod adjusts the structure search that places the map's target. The default settings apply the change to both loot and trades, and each source can be switched off separately. Other options control whether the map is centered on the player, whether the locating task runs in dynamic mode, and whether dynamic tasks are logged to the server console. A gamerule is added for the feature.
Unruled API is a required dependency and is bundled inside the mod, so nothing extra needs to be installed for it. The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing it, and it needs no config file. Files are available for Fabric and Quilt across 28 release versions, 1.18.2 – 26.3, under the MIT License, and the project is open source with public source code and an issue tracker.
Key features
Loot-table map changes
Explorer maps generated from chest loot are changed in the structure search, and this can be turned off.
Villager trade maps
Explorer maps sold by villagers receive the same search change, and trades can be excluded independently of loot.
Player-centered search
An option starts the structure search from the player's position instead of the world origin.
Duplication safeguard
Each map must be held in hand until its result is produced, and tasks are queued so only one runs at a time, which prevents map duping.

Use cases
Survival servers
Server owners who want explorer maps from loot or trades to point to nearby structures can enable the default settings.
Modpack authors
Packs that already use Unruled API can add the mod to a server build and leave clients untouched.
Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack authors who run Fabric or Quilt servers and want explorer map behavior adjusted. Players need nothing installed beyond what the server requires.

Ever been tired of your server lagging an awful lot when you open a chest that may contain an explorer map? Or when you level up a cartographer villager? Even more with a lot of mods, so much that you can get up to multiple explorer maps in a single chest, or as villager trades, which would cause massive lag upon…
