Enchantment Decay
by Nerjal_Nosk
Enchantment Decay makes enchantments on tools and gear lose levels over time, and Magic players who keep their gear leveled up must manage that slow erosion.
What it does
Each enchantment carries a chance to decay a little as the player uses the item. When an enchantment's decay reaches a certain level, the enchantment drops one level and the decay counter resets. Enchantments found in the world as loot can be immune to decay, and the chance for that immunity is adjustable.
The mod's values live in a enchantment decay.properties file, generated in the game's config folder after the first launch. Inside it the default max decay, the default decay probability, the loot decay probability, the loot decay max percentile and the decay immune loot probability can all be set. The decay level is shown on the tool's tooltip beside the enchantment name, and enchantments with decay are marked with a green prefix before the name.
The mod runs on the server only, so players join without installing it. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across seven release versions, 1.19 – 1.20.4, and is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later. Its author notes call the balance unfinished, and feedback is welcomed through the source code's issue tracker.

How it compares
Mo' Enchants is a Forge and NeoForge mod for 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 that runs client and server and is released under All rights reserved, so it is not open source. EMI Enchants is a client-side only mod for Fabric, Forge and Quilt on 1.19.2 – 1.20.4, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. Enchantment Decay differs from both by running on the server alone and changing enchantment levels rather than adding enchantments.
