Max Health Fix

by Nerjal_Nosk

Max Health Fix stops the health reset that happens when a player joins a world with more than the default 20 maximum health.

What it does

On join, vanilla Minecraft resets a player's health to the default maximum of 20 even when the player has a higher maximum, in both single-player and dedicated server worlds. The issue is tracked as MC-17876 and has been open since 2013. Max Health Fix changes the join behavior so the player keeps the maximum health they had, clamped to the actual value rather than reset to 20.

The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing anything and only the server needs it. It is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only and is published for Fabric and NeoForge. Builds are available for the latest game versions, with 1.2-26.1 as the latest file for 26.3, released on 2026-06-15. Fabric API is not required, and no other library is needed.

Key features

  1. Keeps maximum health on join

A player who joins with a raised maximum health keeps it, instead of being set back to the vanilla 20.

  2. Clamped restore

Health is restored only up to the player's actual maximum, so no extra health is granted on join.

  3. No extra dependencies

The fix works without additional libraries, so the mod adds nothing to the mod list beyond itself.

  4. Targets the 1.21+ behavior

The change is aimed at the join reset in Minecraft 1.21 and later, where the issue still occurs.

Use cases

Servers with health boosts

Server owners who give players higher maximum health through other mods or progression can keep those values after rejoining.

Single-player worlds

Players in single-player worlds with raised maximum health avoid losing it each time they reload a save.

Who it’s for: Server owners and players who raise maximum health with other mods or progression systems and want that value to survive a rejoin. The mod needs no client install.

How it compares

Full comparison

Shared Life is also server-side only and open source, under the MIT License, with files for 1.21.1 – 26.2 on Fabric and NeoForge. Health Plus is a client and server mod, licensed under Apache License 2.0, not open source, and is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.20 – 26.2, so both sides need it. Max Health Fix installs on the server alone.

What the author says

For a long time, vanilla Minecraft has had this issue of whenever a player joins a world (both for singleplayer and dedicated servers), or when they respawn, if their health is over the vanilla default (which is 20), then regardless of their actual maximum health, their health will be set back to 20, and then only…
