FerriteCore

by malte0811

FerriteCore lowers the memory the game uses by storing block states and models more compactly, on the client and on servers.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient or server, optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.5 – 26.3

What it does

FerriteCore changes how the game keeps some of its internal data in memory, so the same pack needs less heap space. How much it saves depends on the mods installed. As an example from the author, one test pack dropped from 1,792 MB to 984 MB of heap in a world made from a fixed seed.

Some of its changes only matter on the client, but several of the larger ones also apply to a server, so the author recommends installing it on both sides. Either side can run it, and neither needs it. Its code is open source under the MIT License, with builds for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 33 release versions, covering 1.16.5 – 26.3.

Key features

  1. Lower heap use

Internal game data is stored in more compact structures, reducing the memory a modpack occupies after loading.

  2. Gains on servers too

Several high-impact changes help dedicated servers too, not only the game client.

  3. No new content

The mod adds no blocks, items or settings to manage; it only changes memory layout behind the scenes.

  4. Four loaders

Files exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt; the latest Fabric and NeoForge builds, 9.0.0, target 26.3.

Questions

Should FerriteCore go on the server?

The author recommends both sides, because some of the larger memory savings apply to servers as well as clients.

How much memory does it save?

It depends on the pack. In the author's test with a fixed world seed, heap use fell from 1,792 MB to 984 MB.

What the author says

The amount of memory saved will depend on the pack. In version 2.5.9 of All Of Fabric 3 it reduces the RAM usage (heap size) from 1,792 MB to 984 MB. For comparison the same setup with Hydrogen instead of FerriteCore uses 1,335 MB. These values were measured after generating a world with a fixed seed and waiting for…
