ServerConfigCleaner

by malte0811

ServerConfigCleaner keeps sensitive values in server config files from being sent to connecting players, and it is available for Forge and NeoForge.

ForgeNeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.13.2 – 1.21.4

What it does

When a config option is marked as sensitive, the mod replaces its value with a default before the server syncs config to clients, so secrets such as a bot token stay on the server. Options are found by a heuristic that matches names and values.

Its version numbering differs between Forge and NeoForge because the mod targets two loaders across many releases. The mod runs on the server only, so players join without installing anything. It is published for Forge and NeoForge across 36 release versions, 1.13.2 – 1.21.4, and the code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Sensitive option detection

Config options that look like secrets are flagged during the first stage, and their values are set aside before any sync.

  2. Default value replacement

A flagged value is swapped for the default set by the developer, which is usually a placeholder constant with no secret content.

  3. Known false positives list

Most flagged options turn out to be harmless, so a default list prevents them from being treated as secrets.

  4. Manual additions

Server owners can add their own options to the list, or report a false positive to the author through the issue tracker.

Use cases

Hiding a bot token

A server running a Discord bot can keep its token in the config file without the token being sent to players who join.

Auditing config files

Server owners can check which options the mod flags, then mark additional ones that contain actual sensitive values.

Who it’s for: The mod suits server owners who keep credentials or private settings in config files and want them kept off the client. Players only join the server and do not need it.

Questions

Does ServerConfigCleaner have to be installed on clients?

No. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own.

Which loader should a server use?

Forge and NeoForge are both supported. The latest Forge file is 1.1-1.20.2-mcf for 1.21.4, and the latest NeoForge file is 1.1-1.21.0-neo for 1.21.4, both dated 2024-12-23.

What should a server owner do if an option is wrongly flagged?

Report it by creating an issue that lists the option, so the author can add it to the default list of false positives.

What the author says

NeoForge and MinecraftForge sync the entire content of all "server configs" to the client. Since this is not clear from the naming, some mods ended up putting secret values in these configs, e.g. Discord bot tokens. If you run a server using a mod with this issue, this allows any user that can join your server to…
