Recursive Resources

by enjarai

Players who keep many resource packs can group them into folders inside the resourcepacks directory, and Recursive Resources shows that folder tree in the in-game resource pack menu.

What it does

Recursive Resources is a Fabric mod that reworks the vanilla resource pack screen for players who manage large collections. Subfolders created in the resourcepacks directory appear in the game, and a player can move in and out of them to choose packs. Folders cannot be created or moved from inside the game, so that work is done in an external file browser; changes to the directory structure show up in the menu as they happen. Unzipped packs are detected and listed like zipped ones.

The mod is built around folder-level controls. Buttons above the pack list enable or disable every pack in the current folder at once, and a matching control appears when a folder icon is hovered. Packs switched on this way load in the order they sit in their folder. A folder.json file inside each folder stores that order and other folder settings, and one pack can be referenced from several folders without copying the file.

The mod is a modern-version revival of an earlier resource pack tool, written with a clear preference for power users. It requires CICADA and Fabric API. The mod runs in the client-side only environment, so servers do not need it, and the code is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. Files are published for Fabric across 18 release versions, 1.18.2 – 1.21.7, with 2.7.2+1.21.7 for 1.21.7 as the latest file.

Key features

  1. Folder navigation

Subfolders of the resourcepacks directory open inside the menu, with a folder view and a flat view of every pack.

  2. Folder-level toggles

Buttons enable or disable all packs in the current folder, and a folder icon can switch on its whole contents.

  3. Custom folder icons

An image named icon.png placed in a folder becomes its icon in the pack list.

  4. Folder settings file

A folder.json file sets pack order, folder descriptions and whether a folder is hidden from the list.

  5. Shared packs across folders

The packs field of folder.json can reference packs stored in other folders, so one file serves several folders.

  6. Pack search

Packs can be searched by name and description, with wildcard support.

Profiles of resource packs

Full folders of packs can be enabled together, which works like a set of saved profiles.

Who it’s for: Players who keep large numbers of resource packs and want to organize them by folder, and players who prefer to manage pack order through text files.

How it compares

Resource Tree is a client-side only Fabric mod under the MIT License, with files for 1.21.11 – 26.1.2, a range that does not overlap this mod. ResourcePack Server is server-side only, open source under the MIT License, and published for 1.19 – 1.21.1, so it acts on the server rather than the player's menu. Simple Resource Loader runs on Fabric and Quilt for 1.21 – 26.3 with the client or server optional, and is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only.

Questions

Does Recursive Resources need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is required, along with CICADA. Both must be installed next to Recursive Resources on Fabric.

Does a server need Recursive Resources?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Can the mod create folders from inside the game?

No. Folders and packs must be created or moved in an external file browser, and the menu picks up the changes in real time.

Which game versions have files?

Files exist for 18 release versions, 1.18.2 – 1.21.7, including 1.20.4 and 1.21.4, with 1.21.7 as the latest.

What the author says

An opinionated port of the Resource Pack Organiser mod to modern versions of Minecraft. Most of the features in this mod revolve around folders. Unlike vanilla, any subfolders you create in the.minecraft/resourcepacks folder will be shown ingame, letting you navigate in and out of them to select packs. Due to…
