Do a Barrel Roll

by enjarai

With Do a Barrel Roll installed, elytra flight gains roll, full pitch and yaw control, plus camera smoothing and banking.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient required, server optionalGNU General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.17.1 – 26.3

What it does

Mouse movement on the horizontal axis rolls the player, vertical movement pitches the nose, and the strafe keys steer yaw. The camera orientation is not locked, so flight is no longer limited to the usual up and down steering. Smoothing and banking are applied to the camera as subtle or pronounced modifiers, and every value can be tuned.

The mod is a lightweight, client-side change that leaves the flight physics alone, so it runs on the player's own machine. Installing it on the server as well lets the visuals, especially roll on the player model, be synced between clients. Vanilla clients and servers remain compatible in every combination. Required dependencies are CICADA, Fabric API and Forgified Fabric API, and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) is optional for the in-game config screen. Cardinal Components API is bundled inside the mod. The code is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and files cover 1.17.1 – 26.3 across Fabric, Forge and NeoForge.

Key features

  1. Full camera control in flight

Mouse x rolls, mouse y pitches and the strafe keys yaw, so the camera can turn in every direction.

  2. Camera smoothing and banking

Smoothing and banking modifiers adjust the camera while the player turns, and their strength can be changed.

  3. In-game configuration

Custom mouse behavior, elytra activation restrictions, sensitivity and modifier values are set on a config screen opened from the mods list.

  4. Synced visuals

When the server also runs the mod, playermodel roll and other visuals are shared between clients that have it.

Use cases

Aerobatic flight

Players who fly elytras for stunts, loops and rolls get controls that allow them.

Servers with mixed clients

Players without the mod can still join and play, though they will not see the visuals of others.

Who it’s for: Players who want a more maneuverable elytra and server owners who want roll visuals to be shared between players.

How it compares

Full comparison

Do Another Barrel Roll is NeoForge-only, covers 1.21 – 26.3, and is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only. Its client needs the mod, while the server may run it or skip it. Do an Over Roll is Fabric and NeoForge only, covers 26.1 – 26.1.2, and is not open source, with its license reserved by its author. Riptide Roll is Fabric only for 1.21.1 – 1.21.4 under the MIT License and is not open source; it works on the client alone.

Questions

Does Do a Barrel Roll require Fabric API?

On Fabric, Fabric API is required, along with CICADA and Forgified Fabric API. Each must be installed next to the mod.

Do servers need the mod installed?

No. Players need it in their own game, while a server can run without it.

Will the mod trigger anticheat?

The mod does not change flight physics, so anticheat is unlikely to react, but loops may look like rapid camera movement to the server.

Which versions are supported?

Files cover 1.17.1 – 26.3, and the latest Fabric file is for 26.3, while the latest NeoForge file is for 1.21.1.

What the author says

Do a Barrel Roll is a lightweight, fully clientside mod that changes elytra flight to be more fun and semi-realistic. It achieves this by redesigning movement with a completely unlocked camera orientation in mind, allowing for full pitch, yaw and roll control in flight. Some subtle and less subtle modifiers are also…
