Legendary Tooltips

by Grend

Legendary Tooltips replaces the plain item tooltip on a chosen set of items with an embellished border, and adds further tooltip options for every item.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient-side onlyCreative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivatives 4.01.12.2 – 26.3

What it does

Players can pick which items get an ornate tooltip, so rare gear stands out when the cursor rests on it. The same settings screen also controls centered item names, tooltip shadows, borders tinted to match an item's color, separators under item names, 3D item previews and compact tooltips.

It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing. Installation requires Fabric API, Iceberg and Prism, which are all listed as required dependencies. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with the latest build, 1.6.3, targeting 26.3 and released on 2026-09-22. The mod covers game versions 1.12.2 – 26.3 across 24 release versions, under a Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivatives 4.0 license, so it is not open source.

Borders are not fixed in the jar. A resource pack can replace the built-in border with up to 16 custom borders, and a pack or mod can also define borders through a JSON file, with all active definitions combined rather than overwriting one another. The author links a template image for drawing new borders, and the public wiki covers the configuration options in detail.

Key features

  1. Ornate rare-item tooltips

A chosen selection of items gets an embellished tooltip border instead of the default frame.

  2. Centered item names

Item names can be drawn centered at the top of the tooltip rather than aligned to the left.

  3. Tooltip shadows and separators

Tooltips can carry a drop shadow, and a separator line can be drawn under the item name.

  4. Borders matched to item color

The tooltip border can take on the color of the item, and 3D item previews can appear in the tooltip.

Use cases

Rare loot identification

Players who collect equipment can tell rare pieces apart at a glance by giving them a fancier tooltip.

Custom border packs

Resource pack authors can design up to 16 borders and ship them without changing the mod's code.

Who it’s for: Players who want more visible item tooltips, and resource pack authors who design new tooltip borders. The mod is client-side only, so it needs to be installed on each player's game but not on the server.

How it compares

Full comparison

Tooltip Overhaul is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only and covers 1.20 – 1.21.5, while Legendary Tooltips is not open source and covers a much wider range of versions. Vanilla Tooltips is All rights reserved and covers 1.20.1 – 1.21.11, so it is closed in license and narrower in version coverage. Both alternatives are client-side only, like this mod.

Questions

Yes. Fabric API, Iceberg and Prism are all required dependencies, and they must be installed alongside the mod.

How are custom borders added?

A resource pack can replace the built-in border, or a pack or mod can define borders with a JSON file that combines with other active definitions. The wiki describes the configuration in detail.
