Cosmetic Armor
by Apace
Cosmetic Armor adds four Trinkets slots that show visual armor overrides on a player without changing the gear worn underneath.
What it does
Cosmetic Armor adds four cosmetic slots through the Trinkets API, one each for helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. An item placed in a slot is drawn on the player in place of the armor in that position, while the armor underneath still provides protection.
Only the vanilla armor types can be equipped by default. Items placed in the head position, such as heads, skulls and carved pumpkins, can also be worn in the cosmetic helmet slot.
Cosmetic Armor is open source under the MIT License and is published for Fabric and Quilt. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod. Fabric API is required on Fabric, and Trinkets is required on both loaders. Files cover 1.16.2 – 1.20.1 with 1.6.0 for 1.20.1 as the latest build.
Key features
Four cosmetic slots
Helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots each get a dedicated slot that overrides the visible armor in that position.
Modded armor support
Armor from other mods is accepted once it is added to the matching curios:cosmetic tag, without changes to the armor itself.
Head items in the helmet slot
Heads, skulls and other head items, including carved pumpkins, can be worn in the cosmetic helmet slot.
Always-visible item tag
A custom item tag lists items that always display and cannot be replaced by an item in the matching cosmetic slot.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who want to wear a different look than their armor shows, and server owners who want modded armor to appear in the cosmetic slots.
How it compares
Glass Armor is a Fabric mod for 1.16.5 – 1.20.1 under a custom license, not open source, and it shares the client and server environment. Vesture covers Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for 1.17 – 1.21.4 under the MIT License, and only the server needs it, so clients can join without installing it. Cosmetic Armor is limited to Fabric and Quilt, and it is open source under the MIT License.

What the author says
Since Curios was discontinued on Fabric for 1.17 in favor of the Trinkets API, this mod now uses that. By default, only the vanilla armor types are equippable.
