Tribulation - Difficulty Overhaul
by rfizzle
Tribulation - Difficulty Overhaul replaces the flat difficulty curve of Minecraft with an escalating gauntlet that grows harder the longer a world is played.
What it does
Mob strength is calculated from four independent factors: time, distance from spawn, depth and moon phase. The values are evaluated at the moment a mob spawns, and the four axes stack, so a mob far from spawn, deep underground, on a late night will be tougher than one near the start of a world. Tiered gear is added to match the scaling, and each vanilla mob type has its own tuned scaling rates and caps, so zombies do not scale the same way as skeletons or creepers.
Offsets can be set per dimension, per biome and per structure. The Nether receives a +25 offset and the End +40, while the Deep Dark adds +30 by default. Landmark structures such as ancient cities, end cities, nether fortresses, bastions, ocean monuments and trial chambers carry their own offsets, so the world fights back in named places. The offset system reads biome and structure tags and accepts modded content. The mod is a standalone overhaul with custom mobs and new dimensions, and it is open source under the MIT License.
The mod runs on Fabric for 1.21.1 and needs Fabric API, with the Fabric loader at 0.16.10 or higher. The server must run it, and players must install it too, so the environment is client and server. Settings persist across server restarts and can be toggled individually through Mod Menu and Cloth Config.
Key features
Four-factor mob scaling
Mob stats are computed from time, distance, depth and moon phase when each mob spawns, and the four factors combine.
Tiered threats
Tiers tied to mob counts add behavior such as reinforcing zombies, creepers with a shorter fuse, and skeletons that inflict Hunger II.
Hardened raids and death penalties
Raids can be hardened, and death penalties are opt-in, so server owners choose how punishing the gauntlet is.
Configurable offsets
Flat level offsets for dimensions, biomes, structures and hostile ground can be tuned, and modded biomes and structures can receive them.
Level badge HUD
An optional level badge on the HUD shows the current difficulty level, and it can be turned off along with other parts of the system.
