KubeJS

by KubeJS

KubeJS lets scripts written in JavaScript change recipes, register new items and blocks, and react to world events on a Minecraft server or client.

What it does

KubeJS lets scripts in the JavaScript language manage a server, register custom blocks and items, edit recipes and tags, add handlers for quest mods and adjust world generation. Scripts live in a kubejs folder that is created the first time the game runs with the mod installed, and the folder comes with example scripts to start from.

Scripts fall into two groups. Startup scripts run once when the game loads and are used for registering items and setting up configuration. Server and data scripts load when a player joins a world and suit tasks such as clearing lag entities, showing custom login messages or handling player-related logic. The /reload command re-runs scripts, but some changes need a full game restart and some need a world reload.

Required dependencies are Architectury API, Better Advanced Tooltips, Fabric API and Rhino. Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt builds span eight release versions, 1.18.2 – 26.1.2. KubeJS is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and works on either side, and neither needs it.

Key features

  1. Custom items and blocks

Scripts can register new items and blocks at startup, along with their properties and textures.

  2. Recipe and tag editing

Recipes can be added, removed or changed, and item tags can be edited from scripts without touching data packs.

  3. Event scripts

Server and data scripts respond to world and player events when a world loads or a player joins.

  4. Live reloading

The /reload command applies many script changes without restarting, though some changes still need a restart.

  5. Example scripts

The generated kubejs folder includes example scripts, and the KubeJS wiki collects pre-made scripts for common tasks.

Use cases

Server maintenance

Server owners can clear lag entities, send custom login messages and run player-related logic from data scripts.

Modpack tweaks

Pack authors can change recipes and tags across a modpack from one set of scripts instead of a data pack.

Who it’s for: Modpack authors and server owners who want to script changes in JavaScript. Players with no scripting experience can use the examples and pre-made scripts on the KubeJS wiki.

Questions

Does KubeJS need Fabric API on Forge?

No. Required only on Fabric, the API is not needed on Forge. Architectury API, Better Advanced Tooltips and Rhino are required on every loader.

Does a server need KubeJS installed?

A server can run it without every player installing it, since the mod works on either side, and neither needs it, but startup and data scripts only take effect where the mod is present.

Why does a script change not apply after /reload?

Not every change is reloadable. Some need a game restart and some need a world reload, as noted in the mod's documentation.

Where can the example scripts be found?

The generated kubejs folder contains examples, and the KubeJS wiki has pre-made scripts for common tasks.
