Canelex Keystrokes Revamp
by Polyfrost
Canelex Keystrokes Revamp shows on-screen key indicators for movement, mouse, jump and arrow keys, and is a Forge client mod for 1.8.9.
What it does
Players can customize how the keystroke display looks and behaves. Options cover the overall scale, which keys appear for mouse, jump and arrow input, background and text colors for pressed and unpressed states, the time a key indicator takes to fade after release, and a shadow effect behind the text. Each display can also be set to appear in chat or in GUI screens, or be shown in the F3 debug overlay.
The mod is a revamp of the original Keystrokes mod from Canelex. It runs on Forge for 1.8.9 only, and the Forge file is v1.0.0, dated 2023-11-21. Only the client needs it, so servers run without it. Its configuration screen is built on OneConfig, which is bundled inside the mod. The mod is released under All rights reserved and is not open source, though public source code and an issue tracker are linked by its team, Polyfrost.
Key features
Mouse keystrokes
An indicator for the left and right mouse buttons can be shown alongside the movement keys.
Jump and arrow keys
Separate indicators can display the jump key and the arrow keys, each toggled independently.
Pressed and unpressed colors
Background and text colors can be chosen separately for the pressed and unpressed state of each key.
Fading time and shadow
The fade duration after a key is released is adjustable, and a shadow can be drawn behind the indicator text.
Chat and GUI display
The keystroke display can be shown in chat, in GUI screens, and in the F3 debug overlay, each set separately.

Use cases
Streaming and recording
Viewers can see which keys are pressed while a player records gameplay or streams it.
Practicing movement
Players learning parkour or PvP strafing can watch their own input in real time.
Who it’s for: The mod suits players on Minecraft 1.8.9 with Forge who want a visible record of their key input. Only the client needs it, so it can be used on any server without asking the server owner to install anything.
How it compares
BasicHUD is a Forge mod for 1.8.9, released under the MIT License and open source. Perspective Mod Redux is open source under the MIT License and covers Fabric, Forge and Quilt for 1.8.9 – 1.20.4. WhatI'mPressing is open source under the MIT License and runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.20 – 26.2. Canelex Keystrokes Revamp is not open source and supports only Forge for 1.8.9, so it fits a Forge 1.8.9 setup and not the newer loaders.
