What it does

CustomNameTags is a Fabric mod that lets a server replace the name tag above each player. The change is made entirely on the server, so players join without installing anything. Management happens through a nametag command that needs permission level 2, or the permissions mod node custom-nametags.commands.nametag. Required dependencies are Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin and Text Placeholder API.

Text arguments accept placeholders from Text Placeholder API and formatting tags, so a tag can show the player:displayname value or a rainbow colored string. Nametags are stored in a config file that can also be edited by hand. The mod is open source under the MIT License, and its source code and issue tracker are public.

The mod is published for Fabric across 24 release versions, 1.20 – 26.3, and the latest file, 2.0.0+26.3, is dated 2026-09-15. It was first published on 2023-11-28 and last updated on the same date as the latest file.

Key features

  1. Placeholders and formatting

Text arguments support Text Placeholder API placeholders and a range of formatting tags for color and style.

  2. Rainbow name tags

A nametag can display a player's name in rainbow colors by running a command with a chosen id.

  3. Default and manual assignment

Nametags can be attached to everyone by default, or assigned to chosen players while nobody has one.

  4. Selectors and stacking

Selectors such as everyone, nobody or operators choose who sees a nametag, and entries listed first take priority.

What the author says

This mod provides you with a way to customize your player's name tags completely server-side with no need for any client mods. You are able to manage your nametags from within the game with the /nametag command, this requires permission level 2 or if you are using a permissions mod you can have the permission…
