Potato's Chips 'n' Skills
Potato's Chips 'n' Skills is a Fabric skills system in which players level up skills, gain abilities and gate items behind skill requirements.
What it does
Skill points are earned by killing mobs and completing jobs, and each skill levels up as points are spent on it. Classes let a player choose a set of skills and abilities, and the content tied to skills can gate items behind skill requirements. Everything is defined through datapacks, so a pack author can write new skills without touching code. The wiki covers how to start writing those datapacks.
The mod is aimed at configured modpacks centered on defeating bosses, and at a private server whose skills gallery is planned to be publicized eventually. It requires Cardinal Components API, Fabric API and Fabric Language Kotlin, and is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later, so the source code is open. Files target 1.21 and 1.21.1, with 0.22.1 for 1.21.1 as the latest beta file, published 2026-06-21.
Key features
Datapackable skills
Skills are defined in datapacks, so modpack authors can add or change them without writing Java.
Skill points from play
Killing mobs and completing jobs both award skill points that are spent to level skills up.
Classes
Players pick a class that determines which skills and abilities they start with.
Skill-gated items
Items and content can be locked behind a skill requirement, so progress has to be earned.

Use cases
Boss-focused modpacks
Pack builders can center a progression path on defeating bosses, with skills gating the gear needed to reach them.
Private servers
Server owners can run their own skill setup and share it through a gallery of configured skills.
Who it’s for: Modpack authors and server owners who want a skill-based progression layer driven by datapacks. Players of a configured pack get the skill and class system the pack defines.
