Spyglass Astronomy
by Nettakrim
Spyglass Astronomy turns the night sky into a surface players can draw on, naming and linking the celestial bodies of each world.
What it does
Celestial bodies are generated per world and are the same for every player on that world, with positions that follow largely scientific rules. Players draw their own constellations over the sky with a spyglass mode, select objects, and name them with commands. The sky also gets a broader overhaul with planets and denser, improved points of light, and the mod is aimed at world-building and roleplay rather than gameplay rewards.
Three spyglass modes are cycled with the middle mouse button while zoomed in: vanilla, constellation mode drawn with the amethyst icon, and object mode drawn with the emerald icon. Commands such as /sga:name, /sga:info and /sga:share work on a selected or specified object, and /sga:share produces a code that another player with the mod can enter to add the same constellation or name. Spyglass Astronomy Sync can carry this exchange further, but it needs to be installed on the server as well.
The mod is client-side only, so a server does not need it and players join without installing anything on the server side. It requires Fabric API, and it is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only. Builds exist for 1.19 – 26.3, and the latest Fabric file is 1.0.27-mc26.3 for 26.3, published 2026-09-23.
Key features
Constellation drawing
Holding the attack button in constellation mode draws lines between points of light, and existing constellations can be selected.
Object selection
Object mode selects celestial bodies, where comets are handled as planets in commands.
Naming and information commands
/sga:name assigns a name to a selected object, and /sga:info shows details, including for objects picked from command suggestions.
Constellation sharing
/sga:share creates a code that can be sent in chat or private messages so another player can add the same constellation or name.
Cosmos rendering
With the optional Cosmos mod, its rendering and most of its settings apply, and a higher starCount through /sga:admin gives denser skies.
