Smaller Nether Portals
by Serilum
Players who build a nether portal in a tight space can use Smaller Nether Portals, which adds 1x2, 1x3 and 2x2 portal sizes beside the standard frame.
What it does
The mod lets a player light a nether portal in three smaller frame sizes: 1x2, 1x3 and 2x2. A vanilla nether portal needs more room than these, so the smaller forms suit tunnels, narrow bases and areas with limited space. Corners of the frame can be left out when a player wants a simpler build.
Vanilla teleporting from a small portal can drop a traveler underneath the portal on the far side. The mod detects that case and relocates them to the open area beside the frame. Where the block below is netherrack, soul sand or air, it is replaced with obsidian so the arrival spot is safe, and an air gap is created when one is needed.
The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing anything. It requires Collective and is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with files covering 1.16.5 – 26.3. The latest file is 26.3.0-4.1-fabric+forge+neo for 26.3, dated 2026-10-02. The mod is not open source and is released under All rights reserved.
Key features
Three smaller portal sizes
Portals can be lit in 1x2, 1x3 and 2x2 frames, each smaller than the standard vanilla nether portal.
Optional corner omission
A player may leave out the corner blocks of the frame and still light the portal.
Safe arrival spot
After a teleport, a traveler is relocated to the open area beside the portal when the vanilla landing would be underground.
Obsidian floor replacement
Netherrack, soul sand or air under the arrival point is swapped for obsidian to prevent deaths on arrival.

Use cases
Compact nether hubs
Builders who want several portals in a small area can place the smaller forms without clearing extra space.
Who it’s for: Players who build nether travel into tight layouts, and server owners who want portal travel with fewer arrival deaths. Only the server needs the mod.

Smaller Nether Portals is a minimalistic mod which allows the creation of smaller nether portals, specifically the sizes 1x2, 1x3 and 2x2. Note: There is currently a "bug" in Minecraft when teleporting from a smaller portal, which places the player underneath the portal on the other side. The mod can detect when this…
