Villager Names

by Serilum

With Villager Names installed on a server, unnamed villagers receive a name drawn from a list of more than 5000 entries, including villagers added by other mods.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalAll rights reserved1.16.5 – 26.3

What it does

Every unnamed villager, whether it spawned before or after the mod was added, is given a name chosen at random from a built-in list. The list is split into female and male names, and each can be switched off in the config. Players can also supply their own name list, and a separate option decides whether custom and default names are mixed.

The profession appears on the trade screen next to the villager's name, and the merchant level such as novice or apprentice can be hidden. Profession labels follow the game language. An option swaps the name and profession positions on that screen. Modded villager-like entities can be named as well, which the nameModdedVillagers option controls.

The mod requires Collective on every loader. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 29 release versions, 1.16.5 – 26.3. Only the server has to run it; players may leave it out, so the server requires it while the client can skip it. The code is not open source, and all rights are reserved.

Key features

  1. Built-in name list

More than 5000 pre-defined names are assigned to unnamed villagers at random as they are detected.

  2. Custom name lists

Server owners can add their own names, separated by commas, and choose whether they are capitalized.

  3. Profession on trade screen

The villager's profession is shown beside the name, localized in the game language.

  4. Trade screen options

Settings allow the name and profession to swap places, and the merchant level to be hidden.

Use cases

Livelier villages

Villages on a server show named residents rather than generic entries, which helps when players talk about specific traders.

Modded villagers

Villager-like entities added by other mods can also receive names when the nameModdedVillagers option is on.

Who it’s for: Server owners who want named villagers and players who trade with them regularly. Because only the server needs the mod, players can join without installing it.

How it compares

Villager Name Is Profession is client-side only, so it changes what a single player sees on their own client, under the MIT License, and it is published for 1.19.2 – 26.1.2 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Show Dimension In Name is open source under the MIT License, with files for 1.20 – 26.3 on all four loaders, and is needed on the server, with the client optional without the other needing it. Untradable Villagers is not open source, covers 1.20 – 1.21.1, and is needed on the server, with the client optional.

Questions

Does Villager Names need Collective?

Yes. Collective is a required dependency, so it must be installed alongside Villager Names on the same loader.

Do players need the mod installed?

No. The server must run the mod, while players can leave it out and join without it, so the client side is optional.

Can server owners add their own names?

Yes. Custom names can be typed into the config as a comma-separated list, and the useBothCustomAndDefaultNames option decides whether they are mixed with the built-in list.

Which loaders are supported?

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The latest file for each loader is version 26.3.0-8.7-fabric+forge+neo for 26.3, dated 2026-10-01.
