Shogi

by BlayTheNinth

Shogi is a library that gives mod authors a rule-based effect system, which players then configure with expressions and JSON.

FabricNeoForgeClient or server, optionalAll rights reserved26.1 – 26.3

What it does

The library evaluates rules against context such as the player, the dimension, or other conditions, so one setting can respond to the situation it applies to. Rules are written in a simple expression syntax, and plain JSON files are also supported for players and server owners who prefer that format.

Shogi is used by other mods for dynamic configuration. Waystones uses it to set warp requirements that change with context, and Unbreakables uses it to decide which blocks cannot be broken. Four catalog mods, including Little Joys, Unbreakables, [SWG] Simple Waystones Groups and Waystones Item Cost Extended, list Shogi as a requirement. Fabric API must also be installed, since it is the only required dependency. The library is published for Fabric and NeoForge across the 26.1 – 26.3 range, with files for 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3, and it is not open source; it is released under All rights reserved. Source code, an issue tracker and a wiki are publicly linked.

Key features

  1. Context-aware rules

Rules evaluate against the player, the dimension and other context, so a single configured value can change with the situation.

  2. Expression syntax

Rules use a compact expression syntax that can be written directly in configuration, without writing code.

  3. JSON configuration

Rules can also be written as JSON, giving a second format for configuration files.

  4. Conditional logic and aggregates

Conditions and aggregate calculations let rules combine several values into one result.

  5. Developer API

A lightweight API lets mod developers add rule support to their own mods with a small amount of code, and includes many built-in effects.

Use cases

Dynamic warp requirements

Waystones sets its warp requirements through Shogi rules, so the cost of travel can depend on context.

Block break rules

Unbreakables uses Shogi rules to define which blocks cannot be broken, with the rules configurable by server owners.

Who it’s for: Mod developers who want configurable, context-dependent behavior in their mods, and server owners who set rules for mods that rely on Shogi.

Questions

Does Shogi need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is the only required dependency, so it must be installed alongside Shogi on Fabric. On NeoForge, Fabric API is not needed.

Which mods require Shogi?

Four catalog mods list it as a requirement: Little Joys, Unbreakables, [SWG] Simple Waystones Groups and Waystones Item Cost Extended.

Is Shogi required on the server?

Either side can run Shogi, and neither needs it. A server that runs a mod requiring Shogi still needs Shogi installed for that mod to work.

In the catalog

Shogi is one of 3,514 Library mods on ModsFinder, and one of 2,348 Library mods for Fabric. 8,071 mods support Minecraft 26.3.

What the author says

This is a library mod that adds a rule-based effect system for use in Minecraft mods. Its most notable use is Waystones, where it controls the highly dynamic warp requirements, and Unbreakables, where it controls the rules of which blocks are unbreakable. To achieve this, mods implement the Shogi API and expose…
