Retro Damage Indicators

by AlexModGuy

Retro Damage Indicators restores the classic modded HUD overlay for Minecraft 1.20.1, showing a mob portrait, health and name boxes.

What it does

When a player looks at or fights a mob, the mod draws a panel on the HUD with a portrait of the mob, its health and name boxes, and the mob type. Mob types cover arthropods, animals, illagers, undead and bosses, and the panel also recognizes creatures added by some other mods.

Position, opacity, size and display options can all be adjusted in the config. Injured mobs also emit a particle showing how much damage they took or how much health they regained, and this particle can be switched off in the same config. The mob type icons and texture rework were made by Ron0.

Retro Damage Indicators runs on the client alone, so servers do not need it. Forge and NeoForge builds are published for 1.20.1, with 1.0.1 as the latest file on both loaders. The code is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only.

Key features

  1. Mob portrait panel

A HUD panel shows a portrait of the targeted mob along with its health and name.

  2. Mob type display

The panel names the mob type, such as arthropod, animal, illager, undead or boss.

  3. Adjustable layout

Position, opacity, size and display settings can be changed to suit the screen.

  4. Damage particles

Hurt mobs produce a particle for damage taken or health regained, which can be toggled off.

Use cases

Combat tracking

Players fighting groups of mobs can read each target's remaining health at a glance.

Modded mob identification

Creatures from other mods are labeled with their mob type, which helps when unfamiliar enemies appear.

Who it’s for: Players who want a classic-style combat overlay on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge or NeoForge, and who are willing to adjust the HUD layout in the config.

Questions

Does Retro Damage Indicators need to be installed on the server?

No. The mod is client-side only, so a server can run without it and players install it alone.

Which loaders does Retro Damage Indicators support for 1.20.1?

Forge and NeoForge. Both have a 1.0.1 file for 1.20.1, published on 2024-04-16.

Can the damage particles be turned off?

Yes. The damage particle feature is toggled in the config, separately from the HUD panel.

What the author says

Alongside the damage indicator rendered on the player's HUD, injured mobs will produce a particle indicating how much damage they have taken when hurt, or how much they have regained when healed. This feature can also be toggled in the config. This mod is made for modpacks in mind, so please feel free to use it in…
