Chat colors
by macuguita
Chat colors lets each player color chat messages and player names on their own screen, with the choices kept between sessions.
What it does
The mod brings color to Minecraft chat. Player names can take the colors of the locator bar, or a custom algorithm can pick from up to 255 colors. Coloring the names of other players makes the body of a message easier to tell apart from the name in front of it, and the coloring can be turned off for names alone.
Each player sets these options individually, and the choices persist between sessions. A player can also disable chat coloring entirely, so their own messages appear with the server's default colors. Because the environment is client-side only, servers need nothing installed and only the player's client applies the colors.
Installation requires Fabric API. Chat colors is published for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with builds for 1.21.11 – 26.1.2 under the MIT License, and its source code and issue tracker are public. Mod Menu and McQoy are optional and can be added alongside it.
Key features
Locator bar colors
Player names can use the colors of the locator bar, so a name matches the color shown for that player elsewhere on screen.
Custom color algorithm
When locator bar colors are disabled, a custom algorithm assigns colors from a palette of up to 255 options.
Separate name and body coloring
Name coloring can be turned off, leaving message text uncolored so the two parts read more clearly.
Own messages on server defaults
A player can disable coloring for their own messages and see them in the server's default colors.
