libMCdev

by AnOpenSauceDev

libMCdev is a utility library for Fabric and Quilt mod developers, bundling small helpers used while building mods for Minecraft 1.20.2 – 1.20.4.

FabricQuiltClient and serverApache License 2.0Open source1.20.2 – 1.20.4

What it does

The library gathers a handful of utilities meant to aid mod development rather than to change gameplay. One tool reads operating system details and gives a more detailed view of the system, with particular attention to Linux. A primitive media API is built on Minecraft's own image system and can be applied to many kinds of content, while a persistent variable API stores small pieces of data across worlds and servers.

A debug system runs code only inside development environments, so diagnostic logic does not reach a production game. The author notes that the project changes frequently and that backwards compatibility is not promised, so developers relying on it should expect updates to alter existing calls. The closest compatibility is said to be ensured by a mod named Methane, and the library partially accommodates some other uses of its code.

The mod is distributed for Fabric and Quilt on Minecraft 1.20.2, 1.20.3 and 1.20.4, with 1.6.1 for 1.20.4 as the latest file, dated 2024-04-07. It is open source under the Apache License 2.0, and the environment is client and server, so both the server and every player need it when it is used in a shipped mod.

Key features

  1. Operating system detection

A tool reports operating system information in more detail than the default, especially on Linux systems.

  2. Media API

An image-based media API built on Minecraft's own image system, usable for many kinds of content.

  3. Persistent variables

Small values can be stored and read back across worlds and servers through a dedicated variable API.

  4. Development-only debug code

A debug system executes code only in development environments, keeping diagnostic routines out of released builds.

How it compares

Full comparison

Datamancer is a Fabric and Quilt library for 1.20 – 1.21 that is open source under the MIT License and also runs client and server. Under Control is a Fabric-only mod for 1.20.1, open source under the MIT License, with the same client and server environment. Persistent Worlds covers Fabric and Forge for 1.20 – 1.20.1 under the MIT License and is client-side only, so it does not need a server install. libMCdev differs by its narrower version range and its Fabric and Quilt loaders.

What the author says

There's probably more, but a lot changes frequently. Speaking of that, backwards compatability is not guaranteed. The closest thing to "compatibility" ensured is whatever Methane calls. If you for some reason do use libMCdev, let me know, and I can partially accomodate for that.
