Lenient Death
by JackFred
Players who die on a server can keep certain items with Lenient Death, which filters what drops by item type, a manual safe list, soulbound rules or chance.
What it does
Lenient Death is a server-side utility for Fabric and Quilt. It works as a filtered version of the keepInventory game rule: a set of configured criteria decides which items stay with the player after death, and everything else drops as usual. The mod is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and it requires Fabric API on both loaders.
Beyond item preservation, the mod handles dropped items. Dropped stacks can receive a glowing outline so players can locate them, items can be made immune to void damage and moved to a secure spot rather than removed, and the coordinates of a death can be logged in chat. Items that were kept can be returned to their original inventory slots after respawn. Builds cover 1.16.4 – 1.21.4, with the latest files for 1.21.4, and snapshot builds are published.
The mod is used by server owners who want a gentler death penalty than vanilla, without a separate gravestone mechanic. The author describes it as a server-sided alternative to gravestone mods. Lenient Death Connector Fix requires it.
Key features
Filtered item keeping
Only items matching the configured criteria stay in the inventory after death, while the rest drop normally.
Several selection methods
Items can be kept through a manual safe list, by item type, through a soulbound system or by random chance.
Glowing dropped items
Dropped stacks can be given a glowing outline so players can find them again with less searching.
Void immunity
Dropped items can be moved to a secure spot instead of being removed by the void.
Coordinates in chat
The position of a death can be logged to chat, so the location is recorded for the player.

Use cases
Survival servers
Server owners can soften death penalties while keeping item loss as a risk for unprotected items.
Modded packs
Packs that want a server-side alternative to gravestone mods can use it without any client install.
Who it’s for: Server owners who run survival worlds and want a configurable death penalty. Players need nothing installed, since the mod is server-side only.
How it compares
Keep XP on Death is a Fabric-only, server-side mod under the CC0 1.0 Universal license, for 1.19.4 – 1.20.4, and it preserves experience rather than items. Keep Inventory covers Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.8.9 – 26.1.2 under the MIT License, a much wider version span. SomeInventory is server-side and not open source, with All rights reserved and files for 26.1 – 26.2 on Fabric and Quilt.
