Exchange Wands
by tser239
Exchange Wands lets a player swap one block for another in the world, with a wand that replaces only the targeted block and keeps its state.
What it does
The wand replaces a block with a different one while keeping its facing, waterlogged and lit properties where the two blocks share them. Inventories such as chests, barrels and furnaces keep their contents during the swap, and tile entity data transfers with them. NBT data is restored, so the replaced block keeps its stored state.
Every exchange removes one item from the player's inventory, and survival inventory limits apply, so the wand cannot be used to create free blocks. The wand has a durability value and a cooldown between uses. Replacement is deterministic, meaning the same target and wand always produce the same result.
Installation needs Fabric API on Fabric. Exchange Wands runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it. It is released under the MIT License and is not open source, with files for 1.20.1 only, the latest being 1.0.0+1.20.1 for 1.20.1, published 2026-03-24. The author is migrating later versions and says updates will follow stable APIs.
Key features
Block swapping
Replace a targeted block with another block type in a single use of the wand.
State and container transfer
Facing, waterlogged and lit properties carry over, and chest, barrel and furnace contents move with the block.
Survival limits
Each exchange consumes one item, and inventory limits apply in survival, so swaps cost resources.
Durability and cooldown
The wand wears down with use and pauses for a cooldown between exchanges.

Use cases
Rebuilding a structure
A builder can swap a block type across a finished area without clearing and placing each block again.
Fixing a wrong block
A single misplaced block can be replaced in place, keeping its orientation and contents.
Who it’s for: Players who build in survival and want to change blocks in place, and server owners who run survival worlds where item costs should still apply.
