Effect Insights

by Fuzs

Effect Insights adds plain-language explanations of potion and food status effects to item tooltips and to the effects list in the inventory.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient-side onlyMozilla Public License 2.0Open source1.18.2 – 26.3

What it does

Effects that come from potions, suspicious stew and food carry their description inside the tooltip, so a player can read what an item will do before consuming it. Active effects on the player can be checked by hovering over them in the inventory screen. The text uses one consistent layout across both places.

The mod is client-side only, so a server does not need it and players can join a server without installing it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and the latest builds cover 1.18.2 – 26.3. Fabric builds require Fabric API, Forge Config API Port and Puzzles Lib, while Forge Config Screens is optional. The code is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and the source and issue tracker are public.

Configuration can be changed in game through the mod menu when that is available. Manual edits are made in a text editor on the files in the config folder, named after the mod ID with client, common or server suffixes, and not every type exists for every mod.

Key features

  1. Effect explanations

Each potion and food effect shows a short readable description of what it does to the player.

  2. Optional source details

The tooltip can also show the mod that added an effect and the effect ID, for players who want more context.

  3. Tooltip layout

Descriptions are formatted to sit inside existing item tooltips without changing their general appearance.

  4. Adjustable display

Settings control when and where descriptions appear, and how their text is formatted.

Use cases

Checking a brew before drinking

A player hovers over a potion or suspicious stew in the inventory to read its effects before using it.

Reviewing active effects

A player hovers over an active effect in the inventory to see what it does and how long it lasts.

Who it’s for: Players who use many potions or food with effects and want the descriptions in front of them, without looking them up on a wiki. Players who play on a server without the mod can still join, since only the client needs it.

Questions

Does Effect Insights need Fabric API on every loader?

No. Fabric API is required only on Fabric, where Forge Config API Port and Puzzles Lib are also required. On NeoForge, Puzzles Lib is the required dependency.

Does a server need Effect Insights?

No. The mod is client-side only, so the server runs without it and each player installs it on their own client.

Where are the config files stored?

In the config folder of the game directory, named after the mod ID with client, common or server suffixes, depending on which types the mod provides.
