Dimitri's Smithing
by dimitrib1
Dimitri's Smithing is a data pack that rebalances how crafting, upgrading and repairing gear work, so players can keep one set of tools and armor for the whole game.
What it does
The pack changes smithing and anvil recipes so that tools can be repaired at an anvil using materials that normally only repair them through mending. Tools of the same tier can be combined with a shapeless craft, and each upgrade costs an amount of material matching the tier one level higher.
The anvil's prior work penalty is removed entirely, which makes repeated repairs practical without relying on mending. A named, enchanted item in the player's inventory turns into a broken version when its durability runs out, and it cannot be used again until it is repaired at an anvil with mending. The pack is heavily inspired by Tinkerer's Smithing.
The mod is open source under the MIT License. The server needs it, while players may add it or leave it out, so the mod has a server-first role. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and as a data pack, with files for 1.21.9 – 26.2 and 26.2 as the latest build.
Key features
Anvil repair with more materials
Tools that normally only mend through mending can also be repaired at an anvil with suitable materials.
Shapeless tool combining
Tools of the same tier can be crafted together without a fixed pattern, consuming material for the next tier up.
No prior work penalty
The anvil's accumulated work penalty is removed, so repeated repairs stay affordable over a long playthrough.
Broken gear state
Named, enchanted gear that runs out of durability becomes a broken item that stays unusable until anvil repair.

What the author says
Heavily inspired by Tinkerer's Smithing. The intention of this datapack is to make it so that you can carry a single set of tools and armor through your entire journey, steadily upgrading it as you go, without needing to rely on using Mending and carefully watching your gear's durability.
