Gear Tinkering

by azeolii_

Gear Tinkering gives players a way to bring down an item's hidden repair cost with amethyst shards, and adds smithing table uses that make tool work less tedious.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalMIT License1.21 – 26.3

What it does

Each amethyst shard combined with a tool or piece of armor lowers its hidden repair cost by one, until the cost reaches its minimum and a white puff of smoke appears, signalling that no further shards will help. The anvil's Too Expensive message is what this mod works around: repair cost rises with every combination, and once it passes a threshold the item can no longer be worked on. The data pack adds recipes for the smithing table that combine certain items in new ways, and it also resets repair cost, removes trims and curses, transfers enchantments and unsigns books.

Only the server needs the mod, so players can join without installing it. Gear Tinkering is a data pack for the server, published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 17 release versions, with snapshot builds included. It is released under the MIT License and is not open source. A config menu lets server owners disable the features they do not want; all features are enabled by default, and the command to remove the scoreboards the data pack creates is available if the pack is uninstalled.

Key features

  1. Amethyst shard repair

Combining an amethyst shard with an item lowers its repair cost by one, down to a minimum.

  2. Smithing table recipes

New smithing table recipes combine certain items and reset repair cost, remove trims and curses, and transfer enchantments.

  3. Book unsigning

A book can be unsigned at the smithing table, which helps when enchanting with books has become tedious.

  4. Configurable features

A config menu lets server owners switch off any feature they do not want, and every feature is on by default.

Can server owners turn off individual features?
