Tinkerer's Smithing

by sleepingdragoninn

Tinkerer's Smithing rebalances how vanilla equipment is crafted, repaired, enchanted and upgraded, using data-driven recipes for tool materials, armor materials and equipment types.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.15 – 1.21.1

What it does

Tinkerer's Smithing allows repairing vanilla items by durability at a level cost, including fishing rods, and allows upgrading tools and armor between material tiers, including chainmail. Upgrade paths such as iron to diamond are defined in data, and the default vanilla materials are included. Materials inherit the vanilla tool and armor material values.

The mod forgoes removing the mending table, grindstone or enchanting table, and instead buffs the rest of the crafting and enchanting options. Enchanted treasure found in the world becomes more useful, and recipe types and unit costs are balanced against vanilla equipment. Tinkerer's Smithing requires Fabric API on Fabric and Connector with FFAPI on Forge. EMI is an optional dependency for recipe display.

The server needs the mod, while players may leave it out, although the client gains extra polish and better EMI support when installed. Files cover 1.15 – 1.21.1 across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the mod is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, so it is open source. Tinkerer's Smithing: KubeJS Compat requires it.

Key features

  1. Gradual equipment upgrades

Equipment can be improved over time with materials and enchantments, so a first set can be built up tier by tier.

  2. Vanilla item repair

Vanilla items, including fishing rods, can be repaired at a level cost, restoring durability without a new item.

  3. Data-driven recipes

Tool materials, armor materials, equipment types, unit costs and overrides are defined through recipe data.

  4. Portable crafting

A portable crafting option is included, letting players craft without a fixed crafting table nearby.

What the author says

A sentimental and convenient gear crafting rebalance. Server-side, but with some extra polish (and better EMI support) on the client.
