SwingThrough

by sleepingdragoninn

With SwingThrough, a living entity standing behind grass, flowers or crops can be targeted and attacked instead of the transparent block in front of it.

FabricNeoForgeQuiltClient-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.14 – 1.21.1

What it does

When the crosshair rests on a transparent block, such as grass, crops or flowers, and a living entity is within reach behind it, the block target is dropped and the entity becomes the target. The check requires the block to have empty collision, the entity to be living and attackable, and the player not to be riding that entity. Interaction range matches the exact reach used in 1.21.

The mod is a single mixin of about four meaningful lines. It performs no extra raycasts or radius searches. Because the block target is discarded while an entity is targeted, the block outline also disappears in that moment. Only the client needs it, so servers run without it. The code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only.

On NeoForge the mod requires Connector. Fabric and Quilt builds need nothing beyond their loader, and files are published for 33 release versions, 1.14 – 1.21.1.

Key features

  1. Entity targeting through blocks

Living entities behind transparent blocks such as grass, crops and flowers can be targeted and attacked.

  2. Full-range entity targeting

Once the entity qualifies, the full entity targeting range is used in place of the shorter block reach.

  3. Block target discarding

The transparent block is dropped as the target only when the entity meets the conditions, leaving normal block interaction otherwise.

  4. No extra raycasts

Targeting works from the existing crosshair calculation, so no additional raycasts or radius searches run.

Use cases

Farm and garden play

Players tending crops or flower beds can hit mobs standing among the plants without first moving the block aside.

Single-player builds

Players using the client alone can fight through decorative grass or flowers in open terrain.

Who it’s for: Players who want to attack mobs standing behind plants or other transparent blocks on a Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt client, and server owners who want to know that no server-side install is needed.

How it compares

Full comparison

Just Make Paintings Transparent is also client-side only and open source under the MIT License, but it covers versions 1.21 – 1.21.8 and changes how paintings are drawn rather than targeting. Lock On Refabricated is a Fabric-only, client-side, open source mod released under The Unlicense for 1.19 – 1.20.1, and it locks the camera onto a target instead of changing targeting rules. Auto Aim is client-side and loads on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.17 – 26.3, but it is not open source and is released under All rights reserved.

Does SwingThrough have to be installed on the server?

No. Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it.

Which game versions have files?

Files exist for 33 release versions, 1.14 – 1.21.1. The latest Fabric and Quilt files are 1.0.6+1.20 for 1.20.2, and the latest NeoForge file is 1.0.5+1.21 for 1.21.1.

What the author says

Allows targeting living entities through transparent blocks. Thanks to this implementation, the block outline will also disappear while you're targeting the entity.
