Client Sort

by TerminalMC

With Client Sort, a player can tidy a chest or the player inventory by pressing one key, with the order chosen by a modifier held during the press.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient required, server optionalApache License 2.0Open source1.20 – 26.3

What it does

Activating the sort button arranges the items of the open inventory. Without a modifier, the order follows where each item sits in the creative search tab. Holding Shift sorts by quantity in descending order, Control sorts alphabetically, and Alt sorts by ascending item ID. A second button tops up partial stacks in the other inventory using items from the origin inventory, and a restock button fills the other inventory from the origin inventory without creating new item types.

Client Sort is a client mod: only the client needs it, and a server can run without it. Where a server offers server-accelerated operations, the client may still be told by a warning when it asks for an operation the server does not allow. The player can then add a client-side policy that disables the operation, turns off server acceleration, or falls back to client operations. Required dependencies are Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu, and the code is licensed under the Apache License 2.0, so it is open source. Files target 1.20 – 26.3 on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with snapshot builds published.

Key features

  1. Sort by creative tab order

Without a modifier, the button arranges items according to the layout of the creative search tab.

  2. Modifier-based sort orders

Shift, Control and Alt each select a different order: quantity, alphabetical name, or ascending item ID.

  3. Top up partial stacks

A button fills partial stacks in the other inventory with items from the origin inventory.

  4. Restock the other inventory

A restock action fills the other inventory from the origin without adding new item types.

  5. Optional player inventory button

The button is off on the player inventory by default and can be enabled in the editor.

Use cases

Storage management

Players who keep many chests organized use the sort orders to keep related items together.

Server-accelerated sorting

Players on servers that offer accelerated operations can fall back to client-side sorting through the policy setting.

Who it’s for: Players who manage large storage networks, and server owners whose players use inventory sorting. Players on servers that do not run the mod still need it installed to use the sort buttons.

What the author says

Serverside policies are not synced to clients, so if a client attempts to perform a server-accelerated operation that the server does not allow, a warning message will be shown to the client. The player can then opt to add a client-side policy to disable the operation entirely, disable server acceleration, or enable…
