cheap steel
by ZYNX_TWN
cheap steel adds a cheaper crafting path to steel, so other mods that use the metal can be reached sooner in a playthrough.
What it does
The mod adds crafting recipes that make steel with less material than the usual route. Steel ingots, a steel block and steel nuggets are included, and raw steel is handled by the same recipe set. Recipes run both ways, so the steel block can be crafted back into ingots and nuggets.
Players and server owners use the mod to cut the time spent gathering iron and carbon before the metal can be used by other mods. It runs on the client and the server, so both the server and every player need it. Files are published for Forge and NeoForge across 14 release versions, 1.18.2 – 1.21.10, under the MIT License. The mod is not open source.
Compatibility with most mods depends on how those mods define their own steel recipes, so results may differ in heavily modded packs.
Key features
Cheaper steel recipe
Steel is made from fewer inputs than the standard route, and other mods that need steel can use the output.
Steel ingots, block and nuggets
Steel is available as ingots, a storage block and nuggets, so each form can be converted as needed.
Reversible recipes
Crafting recipes work in both directions, letting the steel block break back into ingots and nuggets.
Raw steel handling
Raw steel is covered by the recipe set, so the material is not limited to finished ingots.

Use cases
Modpack progression
Pack authors can place the steel recipe earlier in a progression tree so that dependent mods become available sooner.
Server economy
Server owners who run shops may use the cheaper steel to set prices for metal-based goods.
Who it’s for: Players building modpacks with metal-based content, and server owners who want steel available earlier without grinding for it.
