Zombie Awareness

by Corosus

Zombie Awareness makes zombies and other hostile mobs react to blood, noise and exposed light, so they track players down instead of wandering aimlessly.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.12.1 – 1.21.1

What it does

When a player is hurt, blood is left on the ground, and at low health the player bleeds out now and then. Nearby monsters sense that scent and follow it to the player. Several other actions also draw attention: mining or placing blocks, explosions, shooting bows and crossbows, eating, opening doors, gates, chests, barrels and pistons, and using levers, buttons, pressure plates, tripwires, note blocks and records. Zombies calling to one another can alert the rest of the group too. The louder a sound is, the farther away it can be heard.

Monsters can spot exposed light sources from a long distance and will come to investigate when they have line of sight to one. Pistons or TNT can lure zombies toward a chosen area, which helps a player escape, since monsters always head for the loudest noise. Which monsters receive these behaviors is configurable. Zombie, husk, creeper, skeleton, stray, witch and zombie villager are enabled by default. An optional setting lets mobs gather into large groups and wander the surface, and it is off by default.

The mod requires CoroUtil. It runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge with the 1.21.0-1.13.2 files, and game versions 1.12.1 – 1.21.1 are listed across seven release versions. Both the server and every player need it. The code is not open source and is covered by All rights reserved, though the source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Blood scent tracking

Injured players leave blood that monsters follow, and low health causes periodic bleeding.

  2. Sound-based alerts

Mining, explosions, doors, chests and many other actions draw monsters toward their source.

  3. Light source awareness

Exposed light sources are visible to monsters from far away, prompting them to investigate.

  4. Configurable mob list

Choose which monster types get the enhanced awareness, with a default set already enabled.

  5. Optional wandering hordes

Mobs can gather in large groups and roam the surface, a setting that is off by default.

Use cases

Luring monsters away

Pistons or TNT placed in one area pull zombies toward it, giving a player room to get away.

Who it’s for: Players who want zombies and other hostile mobs to behave more intelligently, and server owners who want to tune which monsters react to noise, blood and light.
