Out Of Sight
by Corosus
Out Of Sight limits how far away modded tile entities are rendered, so machines, lights and other block-entity content far from the player stop costing frame time.
What it does
The mod stops modded tile entities from rendering beyond a set distance, by default 24 blocks. The range is configurable in the config file, so each player can pick the value that suits a given modpack. After changing the config, running reloadconfig in the client console applies the new range without restarting Minecraft.
It is aimed at large modded factory bases and multiplayer modpacks, where many tile entities are visible at once and frame rates drop. The author reports that frame rates can rise sharply near busy bases, and that the mod was tested alongside modpacks containing more than 100 mods. Results depend on the modpack, and the author shows a side-by-side comparison video on the project page. Some mods rely on heavy rendering features, and the author notes that compatibility with those is covered in the mod's own description.
Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game. Out Of Sight is for Forge and NeoForge, with files for 1.20.1 only, and both builds are dated 2023-12-02 and share the version 1.20.1-1.0.3. The license is All rights reserved, so the code is not open source, though the source and issue tracker are public.
Key features
Distance-based tile entity culling
Tile entities beyond the configured distance are not rendered, which reduces the work the client does on busy bases.
Configurable render range
The cutoff is set in the config file and defaults to 24 blocks, so it can be tuned per modpack.
Live config reload
Running reloadconfig on the client applies a changed range without restarting the game.
Visible pop-in at the edge
Machines and lights appear as the player gets closer, which is the trade-off for the higher frame rate.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
