XP Rebalance
by draemato
XP Rebalance changes how experience points are gained and lost on NeoForge servers, so that enchanting stays scarce and death costs less.
What it does
The mod targets the experience system of vanilla Minecraft, which serves mainly as a resource for enchanting and as a measure of progress. It adjusts how much XP each action yields, aiming to make the gains feel proportional to the effort involved. Mining certain ores and killing mobs remain the most rewarding interactions, while automated methods that do not require player action yield no XP. The author describes the changes as opinionated, so the values reflect one balancing choice rather than a neutral baseline.
Changes cover crops, Nether Warts, Sweet Berry Bushes, Chorus Flowers, sheep shearing and advancements, which the author says gave flat or insufficient rewards before. Death is adjusted as well: players keep most of their experience, lose only half of their levels, and the default orb that spawns on death is left unmodified. The mod runs on the server, and its author says it is not expected to work with other mods that change XP.
Files target 1.21.1 for NeoForge only, under the MIT License. The code is not open source. The latest file is 0.0.7, published on 2026-06-08 on the alpha channel, and the mod was first published on 2026-05-22.
Key features
Adjusted XP gains
Experience from each action is rebalanced, so gains and losses follow the author's chosen values rather than vanilla amounts.
Scarce enchanting XP
XP is kept as a limited resource for enchanting, so players gather it through play instead of receiving it in bulk.
Crop and plant rewards
Breaking grown crops, Nether Warts, Sweet Berry Bushes and Chorus Flowers, including right-clicking and player projectiles, changes the XP each one gives.
Reduced death penalty
Players lose only half of their XP levels on death instead of a small share of total XP, and the default death orb is kept as it is.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Server owners who want to change how experience is earned and lost on a NeoForge 1.21.1 server. The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing it.

What the author says
XP in Minecraft serves two main purposes: 1. Primary - Enchanting resource 2. Secondary - Subjective value for players However, gains and means of obtainment are wildly disproportional to the action done.
