Epic RPG: Armor Scaling

by HER0XP

Epic RPG: Armor Scaling replaces the vanilla armor formula with a total defense system, so armor mitigation shrinks as incoming hits grow larger.

What it does

Under the mod's rule, armor value is added together with bonus armor toughness and a virtual armor value from protection enchantments to form a total defense figure. Mitigation is then calculated from that total against the size of the hit. A hit that is small relative to total defense is mitigated strongly, while a hit that already exceeds defense loses far less, so almost half the damage can get through. Maximum mitigation is capped at 90%.

The mod suits modpacks in which enemy strength rises steadily over a run, so players must keep upgrading armor sets to survive harsher attacks. It is a server-side only mod, so clients join without installing it. AttributeFix is required, and the mod was originally part of AttributeCore before being split out. Epic RPG: Rarity System depends on it. Files are published for Forge and NeoForge, for game versions 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, under All rights reserved, so the code is not open source.

Key features

  1. Total defense calculation

Armor value, armor toughness bonus and protection enchantments combine into one defense total used for every hit.

  2. Hit-size mitigation

The share of damage blocked falls as the incoming hit grows relative to total defense, so large hits land harder.

  3. Capped mitigation

Mitigation never exceeds 90%, which keeps even well-armored players taking some damage from every attack.

  4. Scaling enemy pressure

The rule is designed for progression where damage keeps rising, so armor upgrades remain necessary later in a run.

Use cases

Progression modpacks

Packs where enemy strength climbs over time use the rule to push players toward regular armor upgrades.

Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack authors who want armor to matter more as enemy damage increases. Players only need to join a server that runs the mod.

What the author says

ArmorScaling was originally part of AttributeCore. It is built for modpacks where enemy damage keeps scaling upwards, so the natural progression forces players to constantly upgrade their armor sets if they want to survive increasingly brutal hits The hit is closer to your total defense, so mitigation is lower than…
