VFP ChatFilter Patch
VFP ChatFilter Patch is a small Fabric client mod that changes which characters ViaFabricPlus accepts in chat when joining older servers.
What it does
The patch replaces the chat filter code that ViaFabricPlus uses through its ViaLegacy library, so that players connecting to ancient Minecraft versions can set their own list of allowed characters. Filtering rules that the default code enforces can be changed, and characters can be let through even when the default filter would block them. A typical case is an older Russian server that uses a Russian font.txt; with the unpatched ViaLegacy, players using the vanilla font.txt get kicked with the message Illegal characters when they type similar text.
The mod is only needed on the client, and the server side is not touched. It requires ViaFabricPlus and is published for Fabric under the Apache License 2.0, as open source, with files for 1.21.10 and 1.21.11. The latest file is 0.2 for 1.21.11, released on 2025-12-30.

Configuration screen
A settings screen opens from a button placed next to the ViaFabricPlus button and holds the options that control the filter.
Replacement of illegal characters
Characters that are not in font.txt can be removed, which is the default, or replaced with a chosen sequence of other characters.
Custom allowed characters
Characters listed in the font.txt in use are accepted, so servers with a custom font can be joined without kicks.
Reload button
A button forces the font.txt file to reload, so edits take effect without restarting the game.

How it compares
The patch is built for the ViaLegacy library and changes only chat filtering on the client. Deshefrator is also a Fabric client-side chat filter, but it is not open source and is published for 1.21.3. The W Chatfilter is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later and targets 1.21.8. Fabis Chatfilter is published for 1.21.11 under the CC0 1.0 Universal license and is not open source.
