Unionized Villagers
by Crosby
Unionized Villagers changes how villagers decide what is worth doing in a village, with rules for housing, trade demands and reactions to damage.
What it does
Villagers in this mod have a set of needs: a home that is well lit, a room large enough to count as a house, and protection from disease, injuries and hazards. When those needs are not met, villagers may refuse a trade or stop working. A villager who is treated with respect will strike up a conversation and say what is missing, so players can see the problem before the village stalls.
Vision and reaction rules are configurable. The view range sets how far a villager notices events, and a separate setting decides whether villagers can see monsters through walls. The minimum room size sets how many navigable blocks make a house viable. Unionized Villagers can be tuned with gamerules, and the author notes that the default impact on performance is set high, so server owners may want to adjust it.
The mod is published for Fabric and Quilt, across 18 release versions. The builds cover 1.17 – 26.1.2. Fabric API is required. Either side can run it, and neither needs it. The code is released under the MIT License and is open source.
Key features
Village needs
Villagers track whether their home is well lit and whether they are safe from disease, injuries and hazards.
Trade conditions
A villager may decline to trade until a few demands are met, rather than trading at any time.
Adjustable vision
A configurable view range sets how far away villagers notice what is happening around them.
Gamerule settings
Behavior is adjusted through gamerules, so server owners change rules without editing files.

How it compares
Visible Traders is open source under the MIT License, works on Fabric and NeoForge, and requires client and server with files for 1.20 – 26.3. No Villager Trades is not open source, runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for 1.13 – 1.21.10, and is server required with an optional client. Villager Schedules is open source, Fabric only, and client-side only for 1.19.4 – 1.21.1, so it changes what players see rather than village behavior.

What the author says
Before a villager is willing to trade, they have a few demands that need accommodating or else they will decline. For example: - They want a home for themselves that is well lit up. - They want to be free of any disease or injuries. - They want a village free of any hazards or monsters.
