Sound Culling
by Cukkoo
Players in farms, spawner rooms and machinery areas hear crowded repeats of the same sounds, and Sound Culling lowers or stops them on the client.
What it does
Sound Culling watches sound activity close to the player and keeps a short record of each event. When nearby activity passes its configured limits, a repeated sound can be turned down or kept from starting. Decisions weigh how often a sound repeats, how busy its area is, its category, its distance and its direction, while one noisy source adds only a capped amount to the shared regional count.
Changes stay on the player's machine, so entities, blocks and gameplay are left as they are, and the server does not need the mod. Background music and sounds tied to the listener's position, such as interface audio, are left out of culling. A settings screen opens from the mod list, and client commands report the current preset and session counts without operator permissions. The mod is released under the MIT License and is open source, and it is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 22 release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.3.
Key features
Sound rejection and dampening
Excess sounds are either blocked before they start an audio channel or dampened when full rejection is unnecessary.
Adaptive limits
Culling thresholds rise and fall with the overall sound event rate, so quiet areas are left alone.
Custom sound rules
Rules can protect a specific sound, adjust its priority, or block it from starting, matching exact IDs, wildcards or full namespaces.
Gradual volume changes
Looping and tickable sounds are re-evaluated with gradual volume changes rather than sudden cuts.
Four-page settings screen
The screen does not pause single-player worlds, and presets adjust category and regional limits without removing custom rules.
