SkinTotem
by r2beeaton
With SkinTotem, a Totem of Undying renamed to a Minecraft username takes on that player's skin as its texture on the client.
What it does
SkinTotem looks up the skin of the player named on a renamed Totem of Undying through the Anvil, then renders the totem with a custom texture generated from that skin. Until the skin finishes loading, the totem shows a pending preview, and if no skin is found it falls back to the default texture. The mod works from the Java player skins Minecraft already serves and changes only how totems look on screen. Fabric API is required, so it must be installed next to SkinTotem on Fabric.
The mod is client-side only, so the server and other players do not need it and no changes reach the server. It is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across six release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.3, with the latest Fabric and NeoForge files at 1.0.1 for 26.3 and the latest Forge file at 1.0.1 for 26.2. The code is not open source and is released under All rights reserved, though the source code and issue tracker are public.
Key features
Skin-based totem textures
Renamed Totems of Undying are drawn with custom textures generated from the Minecraft skin of the named player.
Pending preview while loading
While a skin is still loading, the totem shows a placeholder preview rather than a broken texture.
Default skin fallback
When no skin is found, the totem shows the default texture, and a default skin can be set to override that fallback.
Simple in-game config
Options include Mod Enabled, Default Skin, and buttons to refresh all totems or only the totems in the inventory.

Use cases
Gifting totems to friends
Players on a multiplayer server can rename a totem to a friend's username so the totem carries that friend's appearance.
Who it’s for: Players who want custom totem appearances on their own client, including those who play with friends on servers that do not run the mod.
How it compares
Player Totem of Undying is client-side only, open source under the MIT License, and published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.20.1 – 1.21.1, which covers a shorter range of versions than SkinTotem. Player Totem is client-side only as well, open source under the MIT License, and built for Fabric alone across 1.20.1 – 1.21.11. My Totem Doll is client-side only too, but it is not open source and is released under the Creative Commons Attribution No Derivatives 4.0 license.

Client-side custom Totem textures generated from Minecraft skins! Back in 2018, I launched Minecraft Skin to Totem, the first automated skin totem generator that helped popularize this idea.
