Scannable

by Sangar

With a Scannable scanner in hand, a player can survey the area around them for ores, animals, monsters, fluids and chosen blocks or entities.

What it does

Scannable is a small addition to the explorer's tool belt. Its scanner item surveys the nearby area for points of interest, and results appear for a short time as in-world highlights or positioned overlays. Up to three modules can be installed in the scanner at once, and the installed modules decide which kinds of results are shown. Default modules cover animals, monsters, common and rare ores, fluids, plus a configurable entity module and a configurable block module.

The scanner draws energy through the Forge energy API unless the config disables that. Each scan uses energy depending on its installed modules, and a charge can be restored in any compatible charging block. Scanning is spread across several ticks, and the server does none of the scan computation, so the work stays on the client. The scan effect is drawn with a shader on a single quad. Mod support runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, across 10 release versions covering 1.18.2 – 1.21.11.

The mod requires Architectury API and Forge Config API Port, and it also needs Fabric API on Fabric. ToolTipFix is an optional dependency. Scannable runs on client and server, and it is released under the MIT License as open source.

Key features

  1. Animal and monster detection

Dedicated modules reveal animals such as cows and pigs, and monsters such as zombies and creepers.

  2. Ore detection

A common ore module shows coal and iron, and a rare ore module shows gold and diamond.

  3. Fluid detection

A fluid module reveals water and lava in the surrounding area.

  4. Configurable targets

An entity module and a block module can each be set to one specific entity or block type.

  5. Range booster

A range booster module extends how far each scan reaches from the player.

Questions

Does Scannable need Architectury API?

Yes. Architectury API and Forge Config API Port are required, and Fabric API is required on Fabric.

Does the scanner need power?

By default it draws energy through the Forge energy API, and it can be recharged in any compatible charger block. The config can turn this off.

Must the server have Scannable installed?

Yes. The mod runs on client and server, so both need it.
