OpenComputers
by Sangar
OpenComputers adds programmable computers, robots and modular components that run Lua 5.2 and 5.3 programs on Forge.
What it does
Computers from the mod keep their script state across saves. When a chunk unloads, the program stops, and when it loads again, execution resumes at the point where it was saved. Scripts see a Lua environment close to standard Lua, shaped by the limits of the sandbox, and programs can also reach the hardware at a very low level.
Computers are assembled from modular parts such as graphics cards, network cards and redstone cards. Motion sensors, holograms and robots extend them further. The Adapter block connects computers to other mods, for example to read power levels from energy cells. If a compatible power mod is installed, computers need energy by default, and the config can change that.
OpenComputers requires no other mods on Forge, but Galactic Computers and Ender IO - OC Conduits depend on it. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. Files are published for 1.7.10, 1.10.2, 1.11.2 and 1.12.2, with 1.8.10 for 1.12.2 as the latest file, and the mod is open source under the MIT License. The author notes that the mod is no longer maintained and that a successor, OpenComputers II, is in progress.
Key features
Persistent programs
Computer scripts resume where they stopped after the chunk they are in is unloaded and loaded again.
Lua 5.2 and 5.3 scripting
Programs are written in Lua, with the operating system emulating a standard Lua environment inside its sandbox.
Modular hardware
Graphics, network and redstone cards, among other parts, are installed to extend what a computer can do.
Robots and sensors
Robots, motion sensors and holograms add physical and visual interaction to computer setups.
Adapter block
The Adapter connects computers to blocks and machines from other mods, such as energy cells.

Use cases
Automation in a factory
Computers read machine states through adapters and switch redstone outputs according to a program.
Robotic tasks
Robots are programmed to move and act in the world, with sensors reporting what they find.
Who it’s for: Players who enjoy writing code in a game and server owners who want programmable automation on Forge.

What the author says
I am working on a spiritual successor, OpenComputers II, though, if you're interested. This mod adds computers that can be programmed in Lua 5.2 and 5.3. Computers persist across saves (i.e. execution resumes where the computer was saved when it is loaded again), they are highly modular (there are graphics cards…
