Routes
by shiero
Routes builds a physical road network during world generation, linking the towns, structures and areas of a world with signposted, named and lit roads.
What it does
When a world is generated, Routes lays roads between towns and structures so that the map has a connected network before players arrive. Roads follow the ground through terrain-aware pathfinding, and each route gets its own surface, material and lighting, chosen per route. Bridges span rivers, tunnels bore through mountains, and paved channels cross open water. The network closes into loops that enclose named areas, and campfire camps appear along longer stretches with supplies.
The start town is placed among real settlements, so the world spawn sits on the network from the beginning. Routes works in a plain Minecraft world and picks up towns that modpacks add, and the settings let a world decide which towns count. Routes requires Architectury API, Cloth Config API and Fabric API, and works with JourneyMap, Waystones, Wraith Waystones and Xaero's Minimap; with Waystones installed, activating a waystone places the network's named town on the map. The server and every player need the mod installed. Files are published for Fabric and NeoForge across 11 release versions, 1.21.1 – 1.21.11, under a custom license that is not open source.
Key features
Physical road network
Roads are generated as real blocks during world generation, so travel between towns is walked on the ground.
Named and signposted routes
Each road has a name, such as Route 3, and signposts mark it, including passes like Steep Pass shown on the map.
Bridges, tunnels and channels
Rivers are crossed by bridges with decks, mountains by bored tunnels, and open water by paved channels.
Loops around named areas
The network closes rings between nearby towns, enclosing named areas and giving players circuits to follow.
Camps along long stretches
Campfire camps with supplies appear along longer roads, so travel between distant settlements has places to rest.

What the author says
Your world has towns. It should have roads between them. Routes builds a real road network during world generation — physical, signposted, named and lit — running from one settlement to the next across whatever terrain is in the way. It bridges rivers, bores tunnels through mountains and lays paved channels across…
