Rotten Chicken: Rotten Flesh cooks to Chicken
by meenimc
Rotten Chicken changes what Rotten Flesh cooks into: a data pack that turns the item into cooked chicken in a furnace, smoker or campfire.
What it does
The data pack adds a cooking recipe so that rotten flesh, normally a weak food with a poor effect, produces cooked chicken. The recipe works in the furnace, smoker and campfire, and keeps the usual cooking time and experience reward, so each flesh stored gives a small amount of experience when smelted.
Rotten Flesh is otherwise a junk item with little use. The author describes it as a balanced alternative to other datapacks that smelt rotten flesh into leather, and as a change that removes the incentive for a cow farm built around zogglin-style leather trades. Villager trading is weak, so this gives the item a practical purpose without making it overpowered.
Rotten Chicken is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and as a data pack for servers. A server needs the pack for the recipe to apply, while players may add it without changing the result for them. The code is under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0 license, so the project is not open source. Builds cover 1.14 – 26.2.
Key features
Cooking rotten flesh
Rotten flesh can be smelted in a furnace, smoker or campfire to yield cooked chicken instead of the usual result.
Experience on smelting
Cooking one flesh stores experience in the furnace or smoker, matching the reward for other recipes.
Usual cooking time
The conversion takes the same time as the vanilla recipes it replaces, so the change adds no delay.
Balanced change
The recipe is meant as a middle ground for Rotten Flesh, short of changes that make the item overpowered.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Players who want rotten flesh to have a use in survival, and server owners who prefer a data pack over a mod for a small recipe change.
