Leather From the Dead

by BrickBoyMC

Leather From the Dead changes how leather is obtained, so that rotten flesh dropped by zombies can be cooked into leather on a campfire.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalAll rights reserved1.21 – 1.21.11

What it does

Zombies drop rotten flesh, and placing rotten flesh on a campfire cooks it into leather. Players who collect the leather can pick it up from the campfire once it is done. The mod does not change the zombie drop table on its own; the rotten flesh comes from the regular zombie drops that vanilla already provides.

The server is the side that must run the mod, while players may leave it out and still join. Players on a server that runs it get the leather through the campfire without any extra items. Single-player and multiplayer both work, since the server is the side that loads the content.

Leather From the Dead is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and as a data pack for servers that prefer that route. Files cover eight release versions, with 1.21.1+mod for 1.21.1 as the latest file on every loader. The code is not open source; it is released under All rights reserved.

Key features

  1. Rotten flesh cooking

Rotten flesh placed on a campfire is converted into leather, so zombie drops become a leather source.

  2. Campfire pickup

Cooked leather can be picked up from the campfire once the cooking finishes.

  3. Zombie drop source

Rotten flesh comes from zombies, so the leather supply follows where players already fight.

Use cases

Survival leather supply

Players in survival worlds who need leather for armor and books can cook it from rotten flesh they already carry.

Server-side progression

Server owners can add the cooking route without requiring players to install a client mod.

Who it’s for: Server owners who want a leather route through campfires, and survival players who collect rotten flesh from zombies.

How it compares

Full comparison

Rotten Flesh Leather is published for 1.20.5 – 1.21.4 under the BSD 2-Clause License, so it covers older builds than this mod. Its environment is server required with client optional, the same as this mod. Undead Leather is a Fabric mod that runs on client and server and is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. Leather Craft is open source under the MIT License, runs on client and server, and targets Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.16.1 – 1.21.11.

Questions

Does the server need Leather From the Dead?

Yes. The server must run the mod, while players may leave it out and still join.

Which loaders does Leather From the Dead support?

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt have files, and a data pack option exists for servers. The latest file on every loader is 1.21.1+mod for 1.21.1.

Does the mod work on versions before 1.21?

No. The published range starts at 1.21, so earlier game versions have no file for this mod.
