Particle Core

by fzzyhmstrs

Particle Core lowers the cost of particle effects in Minecraft by stopping some particles from spawning at all, rather than hiding them with resource packs.

What it does

Vanilla Minecraft spawns particles in ways that cost more than they need to. Particle Core targets this work. Culling and rendering optimizations reduce the particles that reach the screen, and a config option lets players set a spawn chance for each particle type, from 0.0, which disables it, to a full chance, which keeps normal spawning. Potion particles can be turned off entirely from the same config. The config file has a comment section at its top that explains each setting.

Because particles are prevented from spawning, the gain comes from less work rather than from a visual filter. Only the player's client needs it, so it is installed on the player's game and not on a server. Under the MIT License the source is open, and builds exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. Fabric builds require Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin and Fzzy Config. Forge and NeoForge builds require Kotlin for Forge and KotlinLangForge. Files cover 24 release versions across the game's recent releases.

Key features

  1. Particle culling

Culling and rendering optimizations reduce the particle work done each frame.

  2. Per-type spawn reduction

Each particle type can be assigned a spawn chance in the config to thin its spawning.

  3. Potion particle disabling

Potion particles can be switched off entirely from the config file.

  4. Spawn chance control

Any particle identifier, such as minecraft:smoke, can be given a chance value to thin its spawning.

  5. Partial spawning

A chance between zero and a full chance lets a particle type spawn on only part of its normal attempts.

Use cases

Particle-heavy builds

Players with farms or effects that spawn many particles can lower the spawn chance of the types they do not need.

Potion-heavy play

Players who find potion particles distracting can disable them without changing other particle types.

Who it’s for: Anyone reducing particle load on the client, including those who already run other rendering optimizations.

How it compares

Full comparison

Smart Particles is client-side only, open source under the MIT License, and built for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.7.10 – 26.3. Cullify is client-side only, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and built for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.20.1 – 26.1.2. Particle Core covers Quilt as well, and its spawn-chance config is the feature that differs most from these two.

Questions

Does Particle Core need Fabric API?

Yes, on Fabric builds. Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin and Fzzy Config are required alongside the mod.

Does Particle Core have to be installed on the server?

No. Installation is client-side only, so it goes on the player's game.

Can particle types be disabled one by one?

Yes. Each particle type can be set to a spawn chance in the config, and the lowest setting disables it.

Which loader does Particle Core need on Forge?

Forge and NeoForge builds require Kotlin for Forge and KotlinLangForge instead of the Fabric libraries.

In the catalog

Particle Core is one of 3,545 Optimization mods on ModsFinder, and one of 2,575 Optimization mods for Fabric. 8,071 mods support Minecraft 26.3.

What the author says

Particle Core focuses on one thing: Optimizing particles. Vanilla Minecraft is quite inefficient with particles in a variety of ways. Particle Core aims to improve this. Unlike invis-particle resource packs, this actually prevents the particles from spawning at all, improving performance.
